Spring Cleaning Tips For Electronics

It is that time of year again--time to spring clean your office! If you are unsure of how to properly clean the electronics in your office, do not fret. Below are some tips that will help you keep your computers and phones squeaky clean.

Spring Cleaning Tips:

  • LCD computer screens should be shut off and then cleaned with a microfiber cloth. Be sure not to rub too hard because LCD screens are delicate.
  • If your computers are touch screen compatible, they can be cleaned with water or diluted vinegar. Touch screen devices are usually more resilient than LCD screens.
  • Turn off your keyboard before cleaning it. Use a compressed air can to get rid of dust or crumbs that may be trapped between the keys. For stubborn particles, utilize a clean toothbrush to pry them free.
  • When cleaning your computer, do not forget about the mouse! Unplug the mouse and clean it with rubbing alcohol and a cotton swab.
  • If your company uses cell phones instead of desk phones, remember to clean them with a microfiber cloth. Do not use any liquid to clean the screen of your phone, as this can cause damage.
If you notice an issue with your computer network cabling or phone system when cleaning the office this spring, turn to Reliable & Data Systems. We can help you with our structured cabling services and business phone system installations. To learn more about our services, give us a call at (877) 385-6657 or visit our website.

The Advantages of Fiber Optics

fiber optics | long island | nyc

Businesses all over the country have a wide variety of goals they would like to accomplish. However, there is one goal that every business would like to see: for profits to go up and for costs to go down. By upgrading your business’s cabling to fiber optics, you can see both of the goals realized almost instantly.

  • Increased Capacity - Compared to copper wires, optical fibers are notably thinner. Therefore, more fibers can be bundled together in a single cable. This will allow more signal to be channeled through the cable than your average copper wires.
  • No Interference - Electrical signals tend to interfere with each other, creating a poor connection in copper wiring. Fiber optics utilize light signals that do not interfere with each other. As a result, reception is clearer when you utilize the internet, phone, and television.
  • Less Power- Since the light signals in fiber optics do not interfere with each other and degrade less, a business can utilize lower-power transmitters instead of their high voltage counterparts.
  • Light & Flexible - Even though more optical fibers can fit in a single cable, the average weight is still less than that of copper wire cables. The cables themselves are also more flexible so they can be used in many pieces of technology such as flexible digital cameras.
  • Low Cost - Optical fibers are much cheaper than ordinary copper wires. These less expensive wires will save you and your service providers money.

Fiber optics are the future of cabling and every business should look to replace their current copper wires with it. When you need your current cabling replaced and restructured, contact Reliable Voice & Data Systems. To learn more, or to schedule a free estimate, give us a call at (877) 385-6657.

How to Easily Improve Your Internet Connection

internet speed | long island | nyc

Have you found yourself violently clicking the mouse in an effort to make your internet load faster? Unfortunately, the 50th click of the mouse is not the answer to your problems. Your connection is slow for a reason, and that reason could be something as simple as the location of your router.

Adjust Your Router
Just like your child, you want to give your internet router the best chance to succeed. Burying the unit behind furniture or on the inside of cabinets does not exactly set it up for success. You want to place your router in a central location so that it can spread its reach throughout your home. Some people find that elevated locations work the best, so try mounting the unit on a wall and then monitor the results.

Avoid Other Appliances
Any appliance that gives off a signal can be a possible deterrent for your router’s signal. Things like microwaves and cordless phones should not be in the presence of your almighty router. In today’s cordless age, this might seem impossible, but all you have to do is keep your phone conversations outside the router room.

Secure Your Wireless Channel
While you might think of yourself as a good neighbor, Wi-Fi is not something you should share. It is really just common sense, the more devices using a single router, the slower that connection is going to be. When you setup your Wi-Fi, make sure you establish a password that only you and your family have access to. This is especially important if your neighbor is some kind of crazy internet hacker!

Just a few simple tips and tricks can help solve a few of your internet woes! Whether you’re looking to improve your internet speed, bandwidth, or look into VoIP telephones, Reliable Voice & Data Systems has your back. To learn more, or to schedule a free estimate, give us a call at (877) 385-6657.

Computer Security Myths Debunked

The internet is a place that we’ve become all too familiar with, but how much do we really know about it? Unfortunately, there are a lot of myths about the internet and computer security that give its users the wrong information. Knowing what is fact and what is false is important for your security.

Myth: What are the chances that hackers will come after me?
Fact: The chances of a hacker specifically targeting you are not very high unless you are known to have a lot of information or money. However, there are many internet-wide phishing scams that target vulnerable computers. You can be hacked for your financial information or even just for extra computer space to store illegal materials.

Myth: Incognito windows keep me protected!
Fact: The point of an incognito window is to not save your browser history or cookies from websites. Other than that, it is the same old browser that you always use. The privacy is more for those who share the computer with you than it is to block out your service provider, websites, etc.

Myth: Why should I use anti-malware if I don’t visit harmful websites?
Fact: Just because you only visit safe and secure websites doesn’t mean that you are 100 percent safe. These safe websites that you visit can get hacked and viruses can be uploaded to them. When you visited these sites you can be susceptible to those same viruses. Using anti-malware and virus protection is recommended because even websites like YouTube can be hacked!

Knowing the computer security myths and the truth behind them can help you stay protected during your journey through the internet. Do you want a more secure connection? If so, our computer network cabling services can help. Reliable Voice & Data Systems is here to provide your business with the best computer network cabling services available. The Do's & Don'ts of Network Cabling

There are right ways and wrong ways to install network cabling. Today, we are going to share those secrets with you! Below are the do's and don'ts of network cabling.

Do's
  • Cable length really does matter! You don't want to have a cable that is too long or too short.
  • Cables should be kept cool and dry. Be sure to store your cables in a dry and cool place.
  • Keep in mind that you may need to add cables in the future. When your business grows, you may need additional cables to support that growth.
Don'ts
  • Try to avoid long patch leads. They should only be used if they are absolutely necessary.
  • Never place your cables next to other electrical cables. After all, doing so could result in an interference.
  • Do not put a lot of cables onto a cable tray. If you do, it will decrease the effectiveness of the signal.

The Consequences of Getting Hacked

As of late, there have been many major news stories about large corporations getting hacked. While this is on a large scale, it can also happen to small businesses. Below are some of the consequences businesses face when their computer infrastructure gets hacked.

Identity Theft
Once computer hackers have access to your files, they could commit identity theft. It would be easy for them to take credit card information from your previous customers. Clearly, this is illegal and unlawful. This can cause problems for those customers and they may lose trust in your company.

Access To An Email Database
Computer hackers will also have access to any email databases you have. This can also be seen as important personal information. When they exploit this kind of information, it is a breach of privacy.

We offer structure cabling services here at Reliable Voice and Data Systems. People always ask us what's better: copper or fiber cabling? We are here to give you the facts and let you decide for yourself.

  • Most TDM environments were designed to be compatible with copper cabling.
Fiber Cabling
  • Fiber cables weigh far less than copper cables.
